Jetsun Drakpa Gyeltsen (1147-1216)

Jetsun Drakpa Gyeltsen is the third of the Five Superiors of the Sakya Tradition. His father was Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, and mother was Jomo Machig Od-dron. As a young child Jetsun Drakpa Gyeltsen spent time in solitude, was free of worldly desires, diligent in practicing virtuous qualities, and was free of childish conduct. He received lay vows from Dawa Gyeltsen when he was eight years old. He practiced a very pure life and never touched meat or alcohol.*

His principal teachers were his father Sachen Kunga Nyingpo, and his eldest brother, Sonam Tsemo. He received many teachings of the three baskets and the Four classes of Tantra from many Tibetan, Indian and Nepalese teachers.

Jetsun Drakpa Gyeltsen began teaching at the age of eleven, and taught the Twenty Vows and the extensive Hevajra Tantra to the astonishment of all, after his father passed away.
